a night in ice cream heaven

i shouldn't have said ice cream. i should have said gelato because there really are some distinct differences.

on monday night, my friend heather and i went into the city for a two hour gelato making class extravaganza, and may i mention on the way there we almost had a brief encounter with keira knightley. and by almost i mean we may or may not have been on the same city block as she was.

after dinner with my brother, we walked across the street to mia gelateria. we took a good look around and realized we were easily the youngest duo there. at the class, we made four different flavors: cookies and cream, snickers, tequila and fig (ew), and chocolate hazelnut. I did not even try the tequila and fig. I'm not sure who in their right mind would actually enjoy eating that. regardless, each recipe included measuring out certain amounts of ingredients like whole milk, sugar, and the questionable "mia spice" and then using the immersion blender to make it smooth. we then would pour it into a bucket, which the instructor, E.Z., would pour into the $20,000 gelato machine, the rolls royce of gelato making. they basically had a car in their basement. we got scolded a few times. once for having hair over someones gelato bowl by lehigh alums, once for having a phone out, and once for talking. who knew gelato making class would be taken so seriously?!

the best part of this whole experience was that after the class was over we each got to take home a pint of each of the flavors that we had just made. heather and i had a long trek ahead of us and wouldn't be home for around 2 hours. we brought an insulated grocery bag and hoped for the best. the nice couple next to us gave us some of their ice. i finally got home and put it in the freezer, but it was not safe. it had completely melted and froze back into a freezer burned mess.
the gelato was good, don't get me wrong. but i wasn't mad that it was ruined when i opened the freezer the next day. the experience of actually making it and laughing the whole time i was there was much better than having all the gelato pints in the world.
